California Roadtrip - Day 6

July 26, 2012
Today was uneventful, but at the same time a lot happened.  We got to sleep in this morning at the Spa and enjoyed every single second.  It was very secluded and relaxing…and very warm!  It was really nice and we loved being there, I didn’t want to leave!  We enjoyed our 30 minute massages and sat by the pool for about 30 minutes, and left around noon.  We headed south to San Diego and on our way stopped at In-N-Out Burger.

I have had it before, but you have to have it while you are in California.  It is a must.  I do like Five Guys a lot better, but In-N-Out is cheaper and still good, so I do enjoy eating there every once in a while, just not all the time.  After enjoying some delicious burgers animal style, we got back on the road.  When we got to San Diego, we first went to the Mormon Battalion Historic Site.

We were there for about an hour…which was more than we wanted to be there, but it was fine.  It was a really nice little place that showed some fun videos.  We enjoyed our time there and recommend it to anyone that is visiting Old Town San Diego.  After we did the little tour at the historic site, we walked around Old Town a bit and enjoyed some of the little shops there.

We were only there for about 30 minutes until we decided to head to Seaport Village.  Seaport Village is a cute little place by the boardwalk on the bay with some fun shops and restaurants.  There was a guy there that was stacking rocks on top of each other and making them balance, crazy!!!

Mark has seen him on youtube before and was so excited to see him in person.  We also got a really pretty view of the Coronado Bridge.

It is SO narrow and tall (200 ft tall!) but a really neat view.  There was also a guy there by the bay flying some AWESOME kites.

They were pretty much flying themselves.  He wasn’t holding on to any of them.  They were pretty and neat to see.  We couldn’t decide if we wanted to keep walking down the bay or turn around and eat dinner, so we decided to head back to the car since my foot was hurting thanks to some wood from yesterday.  We then drove through Gaslamp Quarter before heading to dinner (thanks to Groupon) and our hotel in Chula Vista.  On our way to Chula Vista, we missed our turn and ended up going over the Coronado Bridge on accident…and it was the worst wrong turn ever made by anyone, ever.  As we got onto the bridge, we saw this sign:

then we started to talk about it and wonder if it happened often and if it did, why weren’t there suicide barriers on the bridge?  Well literally 1 minute later as we are ABOUT to get off of the bridge onto Coronado Island, I see 2 police cars.  Then I look a little in front of them, and there was a woman dressed in black with long hair.  We were literally SO close to getting off the bridge but instead, we had to see a woman commit suicide.  2 lanes to our left, there she was.  She put one leg over the edge then the cops are yelling at her not to jump then start running after her as she falls to the ocean.  This was right out of the drivers side window as we passed her.  She jumped at the same time Mark’s window was passing her…what are the odds of that happening?  If we had stayed and walked longer around the bay, we would not have seen it.  If we would not have missed our turn, we would not have seen it.  If we were only 30 more seconds ahead or behind where we were, we would not have seen it and I would not have this sick feeling in my stomach.  My heart hurt when I saw her jump and I couldn’t believe what was happening.  I can’t get that image out of my mind and just thinking about it makes me want to cry.  It was so sad, and I hope that I never have to witness something like that ever again.  We finally turned around to head BACK over the bridge that we accidentally went over, and we went to dinner and our hotel.  The hotel is just fine for us and has everything we need, and it has an amazing view of the ocean, so no complaints here.  Well, we didn’t do much today, but we saw much more than we were expecting.  Tomorrow we were planning on going to Coronado Beach…we will see if that happens.  I don’t know if I want to go over that bridge again.  Hopefully I’ll be able to get to sleep tonight.  I am definitely counting my many blessings tonight…and singing a lot of hymns to help me get to sleep.
